Concrete, Clay, Peg, Fibre Cement and Slate Tiles

Clay /Peg Tile Roofs

We are very sympathetic with pegtile or clay tile roofs, we always keep up with the latest products for underneath the roof while still achieving the look of the traditional old Kent peg roof or clay tile roof.

Until the 19th century, plain clay peg tiles were the preferred roof covering for buildings throughout south-east England. The tiles continued to be hand-made from local clays into the first half of the 20th century, and are still being produced today. They are the characteristic roofing material of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex countryside and villages, and they dominate the roofscape of many of the region’s towns. The region has its own particular version of the peg tile, the Kent peg, which is somewhat smaller than tiles found in other parts of the country.

Re-pointing

Re-pointing is a technique where the old, worn down mortar is replaced by new mortar. Mortar provides a sealant between the brickwork in a chimney to maintain the structure. Mortar helps protect the chimney from the British weather.

Mortar gradually erodes over time which is the consequence of constant exposure to wind, rain along with other elements. This exposure and natural decay reduces the weatherproofing of the mortar.

The decayed mortar has to be removed then the use of a new coat of mortar applied which will help prevent dampness and structural failure.

Should you have a chimney issue then please get in touch and we can discuss chimney re-pointing and similar repairs with you.
